To see what programs you have running at startup, go to Start, then Run, and type in: msconfig (and hit enter).
There's a tab for startup items, and you can uncheck what you feel you don't want to automatically start when Windows starts. BUT, and it's a BIG BUT, make sure you know what you're doing, as some programs really need to be running when your pc starts up. Only delete one thing at a time, and then reboot, try your system out, and if necessary re-check the one you unchecked. Good luck.

It depends on your computer (IBM compatible? Apple?) and the software that you're running on it. If it is Windows 95 or later then go to the Start button and click it for the popup menu, choose Settings, Taskbar and StartMenu, click on the Advanced button to open up a view of the Startmenu files then click to open Startup. When looking at the Startup view ensure that you know what each file or program does before deleting it (to save future regrets from occurring). Hopefully this will help you.

You may also want to take a look at which Windows services load as well. You may have some that automatically load that you don't need. These are different than the items you see with msconfig on the Start Up tab.
Although you can access them from the services tab, a better way is outlined in the article below.

Start - "programs" "startup" and remove anything you don't want at startup. It will not delete the programs, you'll just have to start them yourself if you need them.
Good Luck
