What are you doing about it?

Part of the reason the prices are so high is the fact we consumers will pay them.

What I'm doing about it is reducing my gas consumption. I'm driving less, I've slowed down to 55 mph most of the time, no faster than 65. I'm shutting off my a/c when I can and I'm looking for the least expensive gas I can find.

In my town there is one gas distributor--Murphy USA--which is always the first to go up on prices. I no longer buy my gas from them--even when they undersell other local gas stations.

Be a smart consumer.

I don't think the President can do that much about gas prices. He can ask them to lower prices--I think he has already publicly done that. Congress and state legislators could reduce the taxes on gasoline, which can be as much as 2 thirds of what we pay for a gallon. Unfortunately, the President does not have the authority to do that--only Congress can.

I would appreciate Mr. Bush taking a stronger leadership role on this issue, but he has a lot on his plate already.

I believe there is some blame due to the oil companies, but much of it is not very much in their control. They could gain much good will, however, if they would voluntarily reduce their profits to make life easier for the consumer.

Blame China and India for much of the problem as they have driven up the cost of a barrel of oil on the international market.

Best solution is to develop domestic oil sources at the same time we develop ways to get better gas mileage and also develop alternative energy sources.

Gasoline is still rather inexpensive in the USA. Other countries have had to pay much higher prices for gasoline forever. Gas now is cheaper than it was 10 years ago, 20 years ago, and especially 100 years ago, when accounting for inflation is considered. Did you know that the very first barrels of oil that were produced in around 1850 in Pennsylvania cost the equivalent of $700 dollars in today's money???

Now, I hate paying the current price for gasoline just like you. So I try to conserve as much as possible. I drive to work and drive home, but before coming home I do all my running around town that needs to be done. After that I don't go anywhere -- no unnecessary trips, not even 5 miles. Once I get home I stay home. Kinda boring maybe, but it saves me money on gas.

The USA wastes fuel. We have millions of cars and trucks and buses on the road that don't need to be. Trips and deliveries and such need to be consolidated and organized better to maximize fuel usage. BUT, that will never change because the USA is a country on the move and we enjoy our freedom to go anywhere and do anything at whatever time we choose with little regard for conservation of fuel. I admit to not being any better than anyone else-- I never use trains or buses to travel, I use my car. I am a selfish, wasteful American just like millions of others. That's just the way it is.

How about reducing use? Laws of economics control the price. As long as you (or anyone else) goes and puts gas in your car the prices will persist. Walk, ride a bus, take the train, carpool, ride a bike. Reduce demand and prices will be affected. It is not the governments job to regulate prices in a free market society. I don't recall charges of price fixing during the Tickle Me Elmo outbreak, or screams of price gouging over Cabbage Patch Kids. X-Box, PlayStation, etc. going for 800% over retail because of initial supply shortage is the norm. Car aficionados paying $30,000 premium (on top of the asking price) just for the right to buy an early production Shelby Mustang is common. None of these things are garnering a Congressional hearing because they are the results of a capitalistic society. Let's not treat gasoline any different.

Nobody is going to do anything about it because they dont have to...THey know that people need gas so they can make it as high as they want to really.....America does not need Gas other countries have been using other forms of gasoline to control their cars that are way less expencive then oil and they are doing just fine...America just does not want to do it because they dont have to.....The oil companies just pay the government off so they dont use the other source of gas...same thing with cigerette companies, and insurance, they all just pay the government off to get what they wany...The oil companies dont wanna go out of business...

. It is going to go higher due to the corrosion in the Alaska pipeline so hand on to your hat and your wallet. Also watch for higher food prices due to the oil and drought.
And another thing, many of our oil companies that are making the big profits, even tho based in the US are owned by foriegners, what is up with that?
