Well, it depends on your own preference. DC has, by far, the more iconic characters (Superman, Batman...) and a greater focus on its own mythology. Basically, its about a bunch of super-powered beings.

Marvel, on the other hand, is more about a bunch of people who gain superpowers. They have to juggle their normal lives with their superhero lives.

Its easiest to see this basic difference when you compare their most recent giant events. DC's Infinite Crisis had all the major heroes fighting against a villain who was threatening to obliterate the universe so it could start anew. Marvel's Civil War has the heroes facing off against each other over a piece of legislation that would require super-powered beings to register and reveal their identities.

It really depends on whether you want a more realistic (Marvel) or mythological (DC) tale.

As for actual quality of story-telling. That changes depending on the year, month, and day. DC may be the best for a couple of years, but suddenly Marvel jumps up in quality, only to be overtaken, again, by DC a few more years down the line. It just depends.

DC. Marvel has one interesting character (Spider-Man), and even then it depends on the writer. Marvel's stories are kind of lack-luster and boring (in general: Marvel: 1602 was a brilliant mini-series).

DC is just better. The characters are more interesting. The universe is more interesting. Plus there's more than just super-heroes (Marvel doesn't have anything like the Vertigo line -- not that I read a lot of Vertigo stuff, but the choice is there).

Personally, it's a tie for me. DC was first with plenty of characters, and even a number of Marvel's characters are imitations of DC's characters. Examples: Hawkeye from Marvel is obviously a pale imitation of Green Arrow (origins are different, but attitudes and abilities are very similar), Green Lantern and Nova have different abiliites but exceedingly similar origins, Batman and Night Thrasher have similar origins, and the list continues, but Marvel DOES have original characters, such as Thor, Spider-Man, Iron Man, etc. Even the Fantastic Four wouldn't exist had it not been for The Challengers of the Unknown from DC, or X-Men, had it not been for Doom Patrol from DC. While I stray from the topic a bit, both companies have their weaknesses and strengths, and readers shouldn't be put off simply because of a frame of mind that DC is "too old" when they have plenty, plenty of current ideas and mature titles as well. This answer is long and not specific, but I will have to say it's a tie for me.

Bad question. DC and Marvel are just companies. Both with their share of crappy creators. I must say that lately though Marvel has really brought out some top talent. Regardless, Batman and his mythos is still my favorite but I can't wait to read anything Civil War related right now.

The way i always looked at it was this Marvel was always a science comic, in that the heros recieved thier powers in a science way..spidey being bit by radioactive / genetically altered spider, hulk getting bombarded by gamma radiation, genetic mutations such as the x men. Where as DC has always been regular guys or ailens, batman had no super powers, superman from krypton, wonderwoman from amazonia or whatever, green lantern from another planet too. so i would say it is more sci fi then science like marvel.....as for personal opinion i prefer Marvel.

Marvel tends to give their characters more personality that is as close to real life as you can possibly get when you have mutated DNA that gives you super powers. The drama is often soap opera like but it makes for better stories. DC sets most of its super heroes too far apart from humankind to capture the reader's interest as well. For instance, Superman was an invincible alien who had his own fortress of solitude and got away with a terrible disguise, never arousing any suspicion or consequences at work. Spiderman was strong, but not invincible, so the action was more intense because there was real danger for him. He lived in a small apartment which he struggled to pay rent for, had girl troubles, was constantly harassed for missing work, class, etc. He was a normal guy with a family who just happened to be bitten by a radioactive spider. Superman had no family (except his adoptive parents who lived far enough away that they hardly mattered) and only a small handful of friends to interact with. I know that this is only one example from each, but they are milestone characters and pretty representative I think. Both are good, but ya gotta love Spidey.

Marvel, because the universe isn't perfect. They've had tragedies, problems, worries, REAL-life places as settings, we can totally relate to it more. The characters are more realistic than DC. My personal favorite marvel hero is Spider-man, because he started off as a nerd and unpopular and he had worries and troubles. He has limitations to his powers, he lost his girlfriend (Gwen Stacy) in a fight, his Aunt May is sick constantly, he has bill problems, he's just a more realistic guy than Superman. We can relate to Spidey more and that's what makes him so great. That's what makes Marvel so great.

I like DC because they have female characters that have a longer history. Marvel has more recent female characters who are major players in the story lines.

i think its DC, nobody beats superman. but marvel comes close with x-men, spiderman. I think its time a third comic group come about call it.. D-MARVEL C. (detective marvel comics) then will bring batman and robin with the fantastic 4, the hulk with superman. Green lantern can join with cyclops from xmen.
