I am a stay at home mom and it's difficult. I went from being the provider to having someone take care of me. It's a bit of an adjustment. I make up for it a little bit, my kids are now all full time school age so I have returned to college.

I am a stay at home mom, and my other half decided to tell me that I am a stay at home mom because he allows it...
Yet if I go to work then I have to pay for daycare and everything that goes with that....
So the answer is no I have not tried really hard to become a stay at home mom, I miss getting a paycheck and being able to have cash on me when I want to buy something.

it's harder than i thought it would be. i worked for 15 years, even had my now teenage son and got right back into the fray, before i decided to stay home when my daughter was born, 4 yrs ago. i figured since i'd had a successful career, managing a house and a few kids would be a piece of cake... i'd even have more time to do all those things i couldn't working 9 - 5.
mm-hmm... yeah, right ;)
i feel like i've only gotten the hang of it within the last 12 - 18 months. i've got a college degree for cryin' out loud... i've been around the world. i'm financially independent. it's still been one of the more difficult challenges i've encountered. of course, i've had to establish an entirely new social context, too. it's not like i can do happy hour two or three nights a week anymore (didn't do it all that well before anyway ;)). but it's given me all kinds of insights into -- and a profound respect for -- my mother's and grandmother's experience, back when it was the only option a woman had.
in college and in my 20's and early 30's, i would have laughed someone right out of the room for suggesting i'd be doing what i'm doing now. but frankly, i wouldn't go back to the cube farm now for all the chicken tenders and popsicles in the world ;). i'll probably go back to work once the little one is firmly entrenched in school and social life. i do find i still crave grownup conversation on a regular basis. but it's much more likely that whatever i wind up doing, it'll be something that appeals to my more creative instincts, rather than the cold logic and analysis which dogged me daily, racing the other rats.

i did, once, about 20 years ago. i love my kids, but craved adult company, and needed the extra income of my job. luckily, my mom was nearby and became my childcare. i was blessed.

If it's really hard for you, then your maternal instinct is not too strong.
