I think Newsweek puts out a list of the Top 100 places to live in the states. It seems to me that Nashua, NH is always at the top for quality of life, taxes, schools, reasonable housing costs.
Ask your local librarian to find the latest list from Newsweek.
You could probably just get the info off the internet by googling
Newsweek and 100 Top Cities.
Good luck.

I understand that the south eastern US is pretty good relative to housing costs and job opportunities. Taxes are inevitable. You should check out Yahoo's Real Estate section. Yahoo has lots of information about regions and communities.

any city has lots of taxes and the land prices are high, here in las vegas there is no state income tax but property tax is high and sales tax is about medium level, southern indiana the price of houses isnt too bad, unless you go to a college town, the property tax isnt bad. but its very rural in most places.

It costs about 16% less, on average, to live in Rural rather than Urban Areas. Follow this Link, and you will see, State-By-State, Housing Cost. (http://factfinder.census.gov)
From the left column hold your curser over "Housing" and select "Financial".
Click On The 5th Item down: "Financial Housing (For All States)".
