Wikipedia defines a firewall as: A piece of hardware and/or software which functions in a networked environment to prevent some communications forbidden by the security policy, analogous to the function of firewalls in building construction.

Basically, your internet service provider gives you access to the rest of the computers/servers known as the internet. A firewall would keep potential miscreants out of your machine, but, as the old saying goes, if someone wants in your computer bad enough, the only true security measure is unplugging your internet connection.

Depending upon how your internet service provider set you up, you may already have one. Check with them to verify this. Mine didn't. I went out and purchased a Linksys wireless network router that turns the public information given by my ISP into a private address. If you want a standalone firewall, you can obtain software or a hardware device. Software firewalls are applications that install onto your computer and stay resident waiting for network communication to traffic. Hardware firewalls are devices that are installed usually immediately after your ISP's incoming connection, then a wire leads off the back of it to your machine or network device. Software firewalls tend to be much cheaper than the hardware ones. I would recommend you try ZoneAlarm (http://www.zonelabs.com). They can provide a free one that would do the trick for your needs, most likely. They also come with a free tutorial you should read up on after installing the utility.

Hope this helps!

A firewall keeps uninvited programs in and out.

Windows firewall comes with windows, it's easy to use but quite stupid. It thinks everybody on the outside is a bad guy, and that's fine. It thinks everybody on the inside is a good guy, and that's not good.

Comodo has a free firewall that is very capable, but it will ask you questions abot programs that try to get in or out. If you don't recognize the programs, then you are stuck. If you block it, something good might stop working. If you let it through, something bad might get through.

Newer routers come with SPI firewalls, which are quite sophisticated and won't ask you any questions.

A firewall is basically a wall of fire that protects your computer online. It prevents viruses/trojans/hackers etc... from getting to your computer. If you ordered a dell it comes with antivirus/firewall provided by mcafee. The chatroom probably wants you to disable your firewall, so it can access your computer to run its chat software. Hope that helps!

Total manage of populations who're pretty much slaves to the method. The EU is facet of this manage method - infiltrating into each and every foremost networked method like schooling and wellness departments. They name the music. They additionally set unrealistic objectives - which don't seem to be met - so hefty fines are paid - again to the EU governing frame. Now our Pound is on parity with the Euro - it is going to be less difficult for the financial institution of England to give up minting cash, and take the pound out of stream. ID playing cards were a key facet to populace manage. But that is only a stepping stone. ID Chips at the moment are being forcibly implanted into prisoners as an implant to monitor each and every prisoner, and maintain all their lifestyles historical past in this chip which can also be learn at a distance of four hundred metres. Once we take delivery of this for prisoners, banks and scientific professions will push the thought for "defense" motives. Then it is going to come to be legislation - AND YOU WILL BE IMPLANTED. If you don't comply - you are going to come to be a prisoner - and be implanted besides. All your banking, scientific and ID shall be in this chip. There could also be the likelihood to "concentrate" by way of the chip, and, as has been established already, manage or provoke mind siezures. Fist it is going to be an implant on your arm. After folks eliminate those - they wil then insist on mind implantation. If you do not earn ample, say the mistaken factor on web blogs, default on financial institution loans or are or else unprofitable - then you can also simply have a mind hemmorage - and no one suspects a factor.
