Go to Start>Settings>Control Panel and click on Add/Remove Programs. Make sure "show updates" is checked at the top uninstall the latest update.

Once done reboot and then do a windows update.

I would advise to try to find out the reason for the initial failure as well. If your windows is not a legal copy, and the windows updates fail because of that, trying to reinstall the updates would give you the same result over and over again.

Go here (critical updates) and there is a place there to set yours up to do it automatically.

you might have to turn off your virus software, first.
