If your goal is to let loose on the town, that would depend on your sexual orientation.
If you're gay, go to the Castro (but don't go on Halloween cuz the Mission District gangs get rowdy then).
If you're straight, go to North Beach (lots of strip joints & Italian restaurants along Columbus Street).

Not sure what kind of fun you're looking for, but a great way to spend a couple of evenings is to hit the North Beach area. Great Italian food up Broadway, and Chinatown right down Kearney. You can have some drinks and shoot pool at the Condor, with an awesome view to one of the most interesting intersections in the city. Some great little bars mixed in with the strip-bars along Broadway if you're into that scene.
There is too much great food to even begin to list it all, if your group consists of foodies. One of my all-time favorites is Kuleto's over near Union Square.
If you're here for a week, I agree with the other poster about making a run to the wine country. You can drive in a couple hours, but consider a designated driver... the trip home can be interesting.
There are a ton of regular "tourist" things that can be fun. The Fisherman's Wharf area is good for a walk and lunch. There are several good bars if you want to have drinks. And a run across the Golden Gate to the Marin Headlands is a real nice break from the city hustle. Stop down in Sausalito if you'd like. It's not quite the bohemian enclave that it once was, but some nice shops and more great food can be had.
I could go on... but you only have a week.

A must do: ride the cable car. Remember you are in the "wine country of the US", so another must do food & wine.
I recomend Fisherman's Wharf, Alcatraz Island, Angel Island, China Town, Golden Gate Bridge, Pier 39, Winchester Mystery house.
The various neighborhoods in San Francisco have their own personalities: the famous ones like North Beach, the Castro, the Haight, etc. have great scenes.
Around SF visit Mendicino, Silicon Valley, Napa Valley and Sonoma County,
If you like sport: paddle the bay, go to baseball games, bycicle tour,
You should also take the three hour drive up into the Sierra Nevada mountains and check out Yosemite National Park, Sequoia National Forest and Kings Canyon National Park.
