Carpet rake and regular vacuuming. Put down runners that can be thrown in the washer to help reduce the amount of dirt that accumulates in the carpet in the doorways. Also don't let ppl walk in your house with shoes on. That really matts up the carpet.

You can sprinkle carpet scent on it and vacume it. If it still doesn't look fluffy you can get a clean grass rake and go over it in different directions a couple of times. This is very cheap.

If it's not too far gone, then cleaning it (either through a professional service, or with a unit that you purchase at Wal-Mart, Target, etc.) will bring back most of it's previous fluff and color. If it is too matted and worn, then you'll have to replace it for any significant improvement. Good luck!

Rent a carpet shampooer at Kroger or Foodlion. It's only like $20 and they work great
