In a right triangle, the values of sine cosine and tangent are a way of representing ratios between the lengths of the sides of the triangle, in respect to a particular angle (other than the right angle).
sine = opposite / hypotenuse
cosine = adjacent / hypotenuse
tangent = opposite / adjacent

If there are 3 sides to a triangle, sine, cosine and tangent are three ways to write the ratios of the sides. But, since there ARE 3 sides, there are 6 ways to write the ratios of the sides and there are 3 more functions:
sine = side 1 / side 3 = opposite/hypotenuse
cosine = side 2 / side 3 = adjacent / hypotenuse
tangent = side 1 / side 2 = opposite/adjacent
cosecant = side 3 / side 1 = hypotenuse/opposite
secant = side 3 / side 2 = hypotenuse/adjacent
cotangent = side 2 / side 1 = adjacent/opposite

In a right triangle, the longest side is called the hypothenus. and the other two sides are adjacent(side near the angle) and opposite(side opposite the angle). From there we get SOHCAHTOA which means:
SOH: sinexangle= opp/hyp
COH: cosxangle= adj/hyp
TOA: tanxangle= opp/adj

in a right triangle the longest side is the hypotenuse.let us call it c and the legs as a and b and further call a as the side opposite angle A and b as the side opposite angle B
now there are 6 ratios possible with these three sides
a/c,b/c,a/b,c/a,c/b,b/a
theses are named as sinA,cosA,tanA,cosecA,secA and cotA
w.r.t angle A as side a will be opposite to angle A and side b will be adjacent to angle A
but w.r.t. angle B sidea will become the adjacent side and side b will be the opposite side and so the same ratios will be Sib,Cosby,Tabb,Cosby,SEC,Cob
so these are nothing but names given to the ratiosof sides in a right triangle

My highschool geometry teacher told us this long drawn out story about an Indian chief named Soak-Ah-Toe-Ah. You can make up your own story (he likes to dip his toes in a river).
Anyway it helped us remember SOH CAH TOA.
Sine = Opposite/Hypotenuse
Cosine = Adjacent/Hypotenuse
and
Tangent = Opposite/Adjacent

In any right right triangle, they are the ratios of the lengths of:
The opposite side of any angle to the hypotenuse.
The adjacent side of the same angle to the hypotenuse.
The opposite to adjacent sides of that angle.
Respectively.

Take a point (x,y) The distance from this point to the origin is d. The hypotenuse is the line from the origin to the point (length of d)
Theta is the angle from the x-axis to the hypotenuse.
sin(Theta) = y/d
cos(Theta) = x/d
tan(Theta) = y/x
