There are a few things you can do to discourage and fend off these worthless scum.
Invest in a good firewall. Its the single most important thing you can do to protect your important information.
Use a strong password, incorporating upper and lowercase letters, numbers, symbols and alts.
Try to stay away from the places that got you hacked.

That guy that said you cant be hacked in chat was wrong....Yes You Can.I have had the same problem.I enjoy one particular chatroom;and I am no longer able to get in.I wasnt real wise to this "chat thing"..But lesson learned.I have since had to purchase a new home computer.Someone told you to have a strong nick and register..I did ALL that...stil got hacked...I will enjoy chat again later..but I will never register anything attatched to my e-mail....People are just MEAN.I will only go in as a guest when I get my new puter...Take Care..hope I helped....

What do you mean "hacked"? I don't get any interruptions in chat or messenger. I think you had better run a virus scan if you have McAfee or Norton.

1. Be sure your computer don't have keyloggers
2. Be sure your computer don't have trojans
if you are not sure, then format your computer
3. Use firewall
if you are in a LAN (workgroup) there's no way to be safe if you are not using an encriptation communication. Like SSL, SSL Tunnels.

That's the short answer.
There is no long answer.
