Bare in mind, doctors and engineers are paid quite a bit.
People only get paid what the market will bear. As a society, we pay $150 or more for a regular season ticket to sit down low on the 50 yard line. There are thousands of those tickets sold in 16 different NFL stadiums every week.
We choose that, every week. In order to sell the tickets the owners of that ball club has to give the fans a reason to pay for it. So they hire Peyton Manning to QB the team. Someone, thinks that it's worth $150 to sit down low to see Peyton play football, so they buy the tickets every week.
We decide how much those players get paid by supporting the team. If we decided to pay that much to watch teachers teach, then believe me, they would be the highest paid people in America.
Don't blame the people in their jobs. Most of us, if we could get paid $10 million a year to play sports, we would do it.
There is a balance that gets struck. We are willing to work hard for the $$ we get paid, and use some of that to entertain ourselves. As it turns out, humans are willing to pay more to be entertained that we might rationally think is good, but think about that next time you buy a ticket to the game, or your teams replica jersey.

B/c those people are entertaining and people want entertainment more than essentials or good health or whatever. Is it stupid, totally! Example: B/c Peyton Manning throws a football and wins a few games for the Colts, we have to build the Colts a new stadium in Indianapolis when we can't even fill the old one and when Indiana's education system is in a huge rut. What! The money hoosiers spent on the stadium could have made our school system better and done better things for Indiana than a stupid stadium for a dumb guy. But people want entertainment, so they get it instead of better schools or whatever. It blows.

You make the mistake that many make.
We are not paid according to the ethical worth of our job. We are paid by how much money our profession generates. It's business, not ethics.
An actor may get paid a lot of money if their film brings in $100 million. So why shouldn't they get a cut? They were the face of the film. It may not be fair, but it certainly makes sense.
And why do athletes make so much money? Because of television. So many people watch sports that advertisers pay millions to advertise during sports games. A lot of that money goes to the teams, and then they use it to pay the players. The players are the ones we tuned in to watch, right? So why shouldn't they get a lot of money?
I think I have answered your question very well. You are thinking it's not fair, right? It may not seem fair, but it's just because their profession generates so much money that they are able to get a lot.
It should be noted that most entertainers aren't stars; there are tons of actors who don't make much money. It's only the big names that get the biggest money.
I think you also underestimate the value of sports and entertainment in our lives. It is a valuable way for society to release it's work stress.

Just look at it like this. WOULD YOU RATHER eat or WOULD YOU RATHER look at someone run to first base? With that kid of money we can help the homeless, cancer, our country's economy, we can make more jobs for people that need it. Instead of just looking at someone toss a ball just for fun. I'm not saying they shouldn't get paid, but not millions of dollars. There are Way more important things but some of you wouldn't understand. I'd like to see you, go into the army and die and face the fact that you didn't even make half of what professional athletes make. I'd like to watch you run around BARE FEET because you can't afford clothing or STARVE because you can't buy food. I'd like to see you for from cancer because you couldn't afford treatments

They get paid so much because they bring in so much money for the people who pay them. And where does that money come from? From the public, who eats up all that celebrity (stuff), for some bizarre reason. It has nothing to do with worthiness. No one's going to pay big bucks to see a surgeon perform an operation. They make enough money as it is anyway.

Why is a diamond worth more than a gallon of water?
If the current economic and financial underpinnings of the world are bothering you, the only logical action is to alter them.
You can work unilaterally by paying your doctor more than the price of a movie or sporting event ticket. If you're really generous, you can pay him millions directly, just to even things out.

thats easy, they bring in money, many more millions than they are paid. an athlete can be worth 10 times his 6 million dollar a year salary in the way of sponsorships, advertising, ticket sales and whatever else you can think of. trust me, these guys/women are bringing in WAY more money than they are being paid. though it may sound like a rediculous number, remember, sports and entertainment is a business, and if they arent turning a profit then they are out.

The reason they get paid what they do is because all of us will pay it! If we didn't go to the movies or games, they'd be outta work!

'cause we are will to pay out the nose to see them play.
No one is willing to pay a doctor or an engineer what he is worth because their services would be too expensive (actually, some do).
