what is the average hotel room rate in Malaysia?

It really depends on the location. If you are going to KL and you want to stay somewhere that's in the city, I'd say go to the Bukit Bintang area and there's those nice 5 star hotels. On the average, it'd be about RM200 - 300 a night.

In contrast to the first answer you got, there are a lot of decent cheap places to stay. I don't know much about hotel rooms, but I know someone who has a four bedroom apartment and her rent is about $300/month. So, the hotels can't be expensive if rentals are that low. Then again, she got it when the dollar had value.

It really depends on which city or town you like to stay in. For KL, Cheap hotels can go from RM 200-350 for 2 stars near Chinatown and puduraya bus terminal to 5 stars rates from RM 1,000 and skies the limit. For Malacca, try equatorial hotel melaka, which it's rate you can on it's website. For Penang, hotels stay is much cheaper in butterworth then the penang island, which goes from RM 135 for 2 stars and from RM 850 for 5 star.

depend on your budget, RM300 a nite for me is consider expensive but may be not you. When i go for holiday, accommodation is the least on priority because i do spend most of the time sight seeing outdoor, the room just to keep my simple belonging and rest ! If i do paid for RM500 on hotel then i don't think i will want to waste my money leaving the hotel room a single second !

200+ in east malaysia u can stay in a 5 star hotel/suite (crowne plaza, merdeka palace) for just 200+ per nite. the chepaest budget hotel u can get is around 40+ per nite

depends which state and how many stars the hotel you are refering there. won't cost you much per day if you are not planning to stay in 5 star hotel. FYI, POTGH is rated as 6 stars.
