What would you like our government to do about "this whole oil mess"? It's all well and good to say you don't like the situation, but our politicians aren't exactly the brightest of the bunch, and as long as people are so dependent on their cars such, they're not going to find a feasible solution. It's time to get to work and not strike. A lot of scientists and engineers are working hard on finding alternatively-fueled technologies. The problem is that they keep not getting market penetration and people still rely on oil. Vote with your dollars: buy the alternative technologies when you see them. Only when enough of us use alternative fuels will "this oil mess" truly get straightened out.

Excellent rant Answerman and I believe that is coming soon too. The upper Alaskan pipeline at Trudo Bay is being shut down over lack of maintenance to the line since 1977. Where did all the record profit money go for all these years? It's all a whole lot of bull poo. I think the Government should just take control over all resources now in America, and create laws to protect them, and the environment from criminals that exploit our population.

People are afraid of this government. But maybe we can convince them to do a letter campaign and cancel vacations to places that will require the use of gas or oil for transportation. That would send a message. The oil companies made 30.6 billion in net profit in the first 6 months of 2006 according to Wall Street news.

If you can get enough people to do it, it might work. Of course it will mean no one can use their automobiles, gas stoves, gas powered water heaters... I'm all for it! Of course it shouldn't be against the government, they have no control over gas prices. It should be against the oil companies directly, and OPEC indirectly. If you can get everyone to stop use of oil in the U.S., OPEC would loose billions every hour. You pick a date to begin and I'll get as many like minded people as I can to join in. If everyone fills their tank on the same day and then only drives when necessary (preferably not at all), we could hurt the oil companies in the place that they'll feel it the most, in their wallets. Just tell me when, I'm ready!!!

A nationwide strike is highly unlikely.
First you would need a majority that actually cares. Look at the numbers concerning the actual number of people who vote. It is abysmal for this "Beacon of Democracy".
Many Americans are too enslaved to debt to be able to do anything but work. Others simply do not care.
It would take a monstrous event to re-unite the American people into a solidified action.

Go ahead! Start the protest.
But start it at the voting booth. Find out who get's the big oil money contributions. They contribute both ways... about 50/50.
And the French didn't stand up to their government!
The illegal aliens did twice! and the kids just burned cars.
The French wouldn't even protect the French!

Read the Alaska newspapers online, seems they have been stalling and such in their govt for some reasons I can't figure out? greed?
Anyway I do not mean to sound cynical, but just read some of it lately, even before this last bit of bad news about Oil Co pulling out .And i really love Alaska very much, just think they have some issues worth looking into,as a civic standpoint. We ofton overlook our Alaska politics.

If the entire United States actually went on strike, then it may actually make a difference. But a couple hundred thousand people won't have a huge and long lasting impact.

Please. Americans don't have the gumption to control their own oil consumption, and you think they're going to move their widening fannies out of their SUV's and into the streets? The problem is far less our government and far more ourselves. Walking, biking, roller skating, or just plain not going -- now, that's backbone. And smaller fannies.
I tried to find you a reference to ways to reduce oil consumption, but all of them made it the government's responsibility instead of ours. And that's the real problem....

If the French have so much backbone why do they need the government to do things for them that they could do for themselves?
