I believe it is called football, because "War" just does not seem to be a popular word. Look at the jargon "Blitz", "Sack", "Touchdown", Coaches=Generals
Players=Soldiers
"Ground Attack", "Arial Assault", "Interception", "Long Bomb". "Flanker"...it all makes sense.

It's derivative.
In most of the world, soccer is known as football (or futbol).
Rugby is derived from soccer & is sometimes called rugby football.
American football is derived from rugby football & in America became known simply as football.
When Americans were presented with soccer they already had a game called football & thus called it association football.
The word "soccer" was derived from the word "association".

No I don't agree....we call it football because at some points during the game the ball is kicked with a foot.
