I can handle 3" at work for hours without any trouble...
Do you think 4" is too much for friday night dancing?

What kind of dancing?
The faster the dance, the less heel you will want by the end of the night. Assuming you are talking about a dance club, I'd opt for under 3". Walking around is a whole lot different than the fast movement you do when dancing. Somehow I don't think you want to end the night early with a broken heel on your shoes or a twisted ankle. I know that they are sexy, and most women (including me) love them, but spending four hours straight on a hard dance floor is asking too much of your feet.
If you don't care about comfort, then go for the sexy look. I did a couple of times, then I realized my feet were probably going to sue for divorce if I kept it up. Blisters are NOT fun and sexy! The sweat and movement of dancing are a breeding ground for them, you know.

The 4" heel depends on you...I can't dance in them long, and it's just not as cute/sexy when you kick them off and go barefoot...I try to stick to shoes I think I can get through the whole night in...and then too I don't have to worry about having my toes stepped on, or stepping in broken glass or someone's spilled cocktail with my bare feet...

Wear your 4" out one night, but have a more comfy pair in the car to change into...it won't take you long to determine if you're gonna be okay or not...

I wore three inch heels to my friends wedding and after about an hour of danicing my feet where killing me. So I went barefoot the rest of the night. But if you are used to wearing heels to work and stuff then you may have no problem. You will just have to try and find out. And if they are to much for you take a spare pair of heels with you. (Just in Case)

1.5" is just right for a dancing shoe. Heels are not made for human feet. You will likely suffer foot problems in the future for wearing such unnatural footwear. There's a long, long history of women who have learned. But it's your choice whether to be a slave to fashion or to take care of your body. At least remember to stretch out your calves (and Achilles tendons) daily.

Peace.

for dancing, wearing heels isn't too good, you should wear something comfortable. and I guess depends on what kind of dancing too. but best to dance in heels that are slight lightly thicker and not too high, maybe 3 inch is good enough.

For dancing you should be comfortable in your shoes therefore i think that it should not be more than 3".
