I'm thinking about majoring in music performance or education. Any advice? I play classical flute.

If the flute is your passion and you can't imagine doing anything else for a living, then go for it. If you can picture something else, you should probably go with that because it will be a very difficult road as a classical flautist. Count on practicing many hours a day for many years. Then hope for a break. No one gets these gigs without preparing, though, so get ready in case your big opportunity comes.

Choose your college according to the flute professor that you want to study with. That will make a huge difference, both in your playing and the contacts you will graduate with in the business.

Yes. Sorry, but I was about to give a real smartass answer due to the fact that I have no patience with stupid questions, or questions asked by 8 year olds. Ok, I went to Penn State, good school, but not the top of the line for a music major. At PSU, the students that want to major in music must learn how to play and master a variety of instruments. It takes a student with a lot of patience and persevering as music instructors are quite a bit harsh. If you are the sensitive type, as all musicians and artists are, just bite your lip and you will do great. The same instructors have been down the same path as you have. Actually sweetie, if you really have questions, just e-mail me. Music is a tough profession, and if you can get a job in it, and you might consider a back up as well, well, good for you! But, you should definately e-mail me. Good luck ! Lauren
