As a teenager, I here that I am really "mature and sophisicated" because I ballroom & swing dance, listen to jazz/blues (i.e. Billie Holiday or Frank Sinatra) and love theatre and art and things of that nature. I have lots of friends and really hang out with all "cliques" on my high school. I hve never met anybody that listens to the kind of music i do or that knows how to ballroom dance and really likes the things that i like.

So I was wondering, how different does that make me? And if you are a teenager, what kind of things (music or whatever) do you find interesting? Id like to put the theory that im unique to the test. please no rude comments, im just curious.

oh and sorry if i this is under the wrong section.

I am 17. I have also been told most of my life that I was "mature". I, unfortunately, cannot ballroom dance, and can swing dance a tiny bit, but this is only because I haven't had the chance to learn, but believe me, I am all to eager to learn. I adore such "cultured" things as those types of dancing (what the majority of teen culture these days calls dancing is just disgusting and rarely artful at all, in my opinion), and big band/classical/jazz music (Sinatra makes me swoon). I love theater, ballet, operas, and symphonies. I have a tight group of friends who are in choir and drama, we're really close and all share these exact interests. We're nerds, but cool nerds lol. I fit in with most all cliques at school, and am associated with a lot of different types of people although I really just hang out with my 6 girls, we're just that close though.

I have found that there IS a fair number of teenagers that appreciate and enjoy such things, however, I've noted (I've thought about your exact question a lot myself actually) that most people follow the general trends because it's easier and they tend to like such things as rap because it's easy, and it doesn't take much thought or effort, and MOST teenagers don't care to really sit and contemplate, or just try something new. I just like good music, I say. We are unique, but not THAT unique. We're not anomalies, but we're not the norm either.

It is fun to be unique, and we are not the mainstream. But I also find that most of the teens that have higher intelligence -appreciate- the things that we -enjoy-, and like them a bit, they just don't like them to the extent that we do.

So hopefully somewhere in that...rant, there is an answer or contribution for you. :)

well ur not vary different from the people i hang out with. i mean the music my friends usually listen to or play is jazz. but alot of them love the theatre and 2 of my friends already have a job in the theatre.. so dont worry about it.. and ballroom dancing... i find that great. there isnt anything wrong with being mature and sophisicated...

as a teen i mostly find myself listening to classic rock or heavy metal.. but i also find myself fascinated with war history. doesnt matter what war or what battle i love it all..

I'm 17 and you've mastered something I'm still trying to do, "be your own person". I happen to like the old jazz tunes (preferably the big band stuff) and the folk type guitar (like Jack Johnson). The arts amaze me and even though I can't paint, dance or draw worth squat, I like watching other people dance. I also play several instrements. I find the more obscure sports like pool, darts and rougby more intersting than basketball, soccer or football.

Your just unique. here's a link to a poem i wrote on being unique:

Hey you!
I’m unique
Just like you!

We think different.
We talk separately.
And we dream.

We are the same.
We are both different.
Just like everyone else.

Everyone is unique. people say that i am unique because I also can hang out with almost anyone from all groups. being a guy i like sports and more rock alternative music, not really the jazz that you like. there are a lot of people who can ballroom dance.

hope this helps

I like lots of music normally one or two songs from random bands. before 1 year ago I never used to play or listen to music at all in high school. Sometimes I can still go weeks without purposely hearing a song.

I do however like the fact that your different. I have a boyfriend that's a lot like you. Well not a boyfriend but a boy that is my friend.

That's cool that you have developed those interests. I think it makes you different in a good way. You aren't just one of the countless teens that walks around going, "Look, lawls, I'm so emo."
My interests are a little less cultured than yours unfortunately, but I have at least one thing I can think of that makes me different from other teens - I LOVE classic sitcoms much better than modern ones on now. I also don't watch R-rated movies even though I'm old enough to. It's who I am, if it's R-rated then it has something I don't want to see.
So anyway, be proud of your unique interests.

Sounds perfectly normal to me....When I was in high school, I grew up listening to the Beach Boys, Bobby Darin, and the 60s tunes....it seems teens tend to gravitate to what their parents listened to, until they hit a rebelious stage, then they try to pick up whatever is big....some people never hit the rebelious stage, I still have about 2000 45s and 3 record players.
But ya, sound normal.

Yes, you are unique because you give other things a chance instead of just following the latest trends blindly. As you have learned, it is the variety of life that gives it spice and excitement, and helps you to grow into a much more interesting person.
