Judging by your avatar, you're a guy, which means that you're NOT late, as the high school years are a typical age for male dancers to start dancing - even if they want to pursue a professional career. But you'll still need to apply yourself very seriously, with at LEAST 10 hours of dance classes a week, and preferably over 15 if you wish to pursue dance seriously.
Since you are interested in contemporary dance, you will still need a strong foundation in ballet. Try to focus as much as possible on ballet for at least a year in order to master the basics before adding modern classes to your weekly line-up. You need to learn the "rules" of dance and the vocabulary before you start learning about "breaking" those rules with contemporary moves.
Seek out the best training you can find. Good luck.

No, I don't believe it's ever too late unless you're dead, and it's obvious you are not. I am 37 yrs old, I was in drill team/twirling when I was in school took a few lessons on ballet, jazz etc. but dropped out when I got pregnant. Anyway, I'm taking classes now, so that I can teach the kids in my community not only dance but the origin of different dances. It may be hard at first, but you can do it! Trust me, if I can go back at my age as unfit as I am , I'm sure a 16yr old can do it without much too many problems.

well 16 is old for dance when it comes to performing arts
if you are looking for learning it for fun go ahead and learn any genre of dance.. no harm
but if you are very serious bout dancing and want to do something in the field of performing art you bvetter be ready for some hard work cos its a bit too late for starting now!!
(i am not trying to scare you or discourage you)

Not neccessarily. There are many types of dancing that are easy to pick up. Try out salsa, swing, or modern dance classes at a local community college or so sort of dance instruction place. I highly reccomend the former, because it can give a nice boost to your GPA while giving you knowledge you want for a very decent price.

depends how serious u wanna be about it. find an adults dance class tho cos kids doing it ur age will be really far on and u'll get stuck with the kiddies....and that is really embarrassing!
lots of professionall ballet dancers start at five or six and so are getting very good by age 16.
never mind that tho- go for it, it'll be fun!

No, it's never too late to start. The main thing is that you start! Heck, even adults who've never danced before after some lessons and practice get into amateur (USA Dance formerly USABDA) competitions.

If you wanna be a ballerina, it may be too late to start. If you are talking social and ballroom, NO WAY. Regardless, start now, today, don't put it off. Today is the first day in the rest of your life.
Good Luck

you are at perfect age to start dancing especially if you have natural gifts. girls Must start by age 8 or 9. but boys it is different and beneficial if you have power in those legs for the jumps and strength in those arms for the lifts!

you are never to old to learn how to dance. Go take some lessons and have fun. Teach your friends and then they can all tell you how cool you are.
