there are some movies that just need to be seen in the theatre. many epic action movies like the recent rash of superhero flicks are a good example. they're ok on a tv but soooo much better in the theatre.
but most dramas and comedies you might as well wait and rent them because you don't really lose anything on the small screen.
i'm also appaled at movie prices but more so at the bucketheads who seem to think a movie theatre doubles as their living room. they see no problem talking through an entire 2 hour movie, talking on their phone, and just generally being rude, obnoxious, and inconsiderate.
i try to watch movies at odd times. that always helps. if it's on the weekend i'll see the earliest show. you get the cheaper matinee price plus there's hardly anyone there. also try going in the middle of the week. you pay full price but also get an empty theatre.

I would definitely rent it.
It's half the price of the theater.
- and I only pay once, no matter how many people watch. [1]
We can start the movie when we want.
We can pause if we want.
We can rewind a little if we missed something. [2]
We don't spill drinks, so our feet don't stick to the floor.
We can set the volume to a proper level.
We can skip the trailers if we want.
We can fast forward through the opening credits if they're boring.
We can wear whatever we want.
[1] - A group of six went one time ... our cost (not counting snacks) was over $60! The cost to rent the video ... $5. Sometimes I just wait until it's on the telly and watch it then.
[2] - Me : "What did he say?"
Other person :
Me : "Oh, ok. Now what did she say?"
Other person : "I don't know. We were talking"

That all depends some movies have to be seen on the big big screen with the kick *** surround sound of a theater.
A lot of the time though my bf and I like to do movie night where we rent say four movies get some munchies get dressed in our comfy clothes get under the blanket cuddle up and watch them. For the price that we would pay at the theater and it is much more enjoyable and intimate at home.

i say renting the movie is a lot better than going to the theatres.. i meant it has all the benefits.. if u rent it, u can relax at home weraing ur pjs, eating whatever u want, u dont gotta worry about people sitting next to u talking or doing annoying things. in los angeles, the price for a movie is $10, renting the movie at blockbuster's is only $3.99 why not? go for the renting.. unless u really wanna watch that movie in the theatre!! plus, movies comes out quick now!

I really think it depends on the movie. There are some movies that are just soo worth the extra cash to see it on the big screen, especially if you go opening weekend - because then you are one of the first to experience it. For example - the Spiderman movies or Chronicles of Narnia, horror movies too...cause it's dark & everyone in the theatre feeds you their energy. I don't know I guess for me when I go to the movies - its the whole experience. But for movies ur not sure you'll enjoy I think that's when you should save the cash and wait for the rental.

Go to the theater, but only when you have enough evidence to know that you will like the movie & that the movie is good. That's what I do.

Hmm with prices nearing 11 bucks in NYC I prefer netflixing it. However, if I really want to see a movie I'll shell out the 10.75. The Angelika seems to be the only theater that gets my money

well, i prefer renting it or waiting until it goes to the dollar theater...food and movie tickets at like Cinemark, AMC, etc are very expensive....i think a lot of people go to that, because they desperately want to see the movie, and knowing its out already makes them want to see it instead of waiting so they can save money...i used to do that too, until i realized how much money i spent by doing that....so now, i wait for it to come to the dollar theater, and if i don't have time to see it, i just rent it....

Some movies are worth going to see on the big screen. Like I'm glad I went to see War of the World, Lord of the Rings Triology,
X-Men 1,2&3, Spiderman 1&2 and so on and so on on the big screen first. Then I can wait for cable for movies like Hostel, Saw, Nacho Libre, House of Wax and so on and so on.

It all depends on how bad you want to go see a film. Try using the Internet Movie Database to get the G.O on a movie, then maybe read some reviews in the newspaper. If it doesn't tickle your fancy, wait till it comes out on DVD, but if you really want to see it, go ahead and see it!!
