I know its an odd one -- but a cheap 400 Mbps cluster plug into the local cheap 100base net would be neat.

True – its not a network. Oracle changed this with a module donation and open source did the rest.

But there is modules that support networking over firewire. If you built servers you would know already. In laymen terms, I am asking if there is an option that does not require additional specialty routers or optionally an external Ethernet dongle adapter for firewire.

google will not help you with this one.

Firewire is not a network, even though Windows shows it as such in Network Places. It also shows as a "network" in the Network Setup Wizard. Odd, but it shouldn't be there. FireWire is another form of USB Port to plug in devices such as cameras, video recorders, etc. It does not have anything to do with the Ethernet Adapter. These are two seperate items. Sorry, but true.
