wma variable means that it can record the sound basing on the different features of the music by diferent bit rates. But the files is bigger than wma. The wma lossless can record nearly all the music and hardly have any loses of sound, so it is the best one in wma to record music. Of course, the file is also the largest one.
Personally, i suggest the wma variable bits (wma vbr)

WMA lossless is the highest quality Windows Media Audio for ripping Cd's. It compresses audio CD to a range of 206 to 411MB at bit rates of 470 to 940kbps. Which is as close to the live performance as you can get.

VBR gives you the best sound for the amount of disk space on the disk that you have to work with.

WMA sounds just as good as MP3 at half the file size. That's why a lot of MP3 players advertise a capacity of 4,000 songs. That's in WMA format, in MP3 that will only be 2,000 song capacity.
