Really depends on the year. With the newer ones, the RS has usually been a V6 model and the SS the all out high performance model (on the 3rd generation, I think you could get the RS with the 305 V8, and there was no SS). Which one to buy depends on whether you want gas mileage and a low purchase price or a lot of horsepower. Trying to get SS levels of power from an RS V6 would be more expensive than starting with an SS.
With the old '60s cars - the SS is likely to gain the most in value because it's already the most expensive. Back then, you could order both options on the same car.

The differences are slight usually ss cars have a little more engine wise, and rs cars are more visual, but both are great cars.
Either car can be a better buy, it all depends on mileage, condition inside and outside, and how it was maintained.
Chevy parts are very easy to come by regardless of year some just take more money than others. You should be able to find a catalog that has every nut and bolt from the ground up to restore a camaro I found one, just can't remember the name of it.
I had a 1979 Camaro RS, and I'll tell you right now it was a great, and powerful car, and I didn't do much aftermarket work to it. I regret selling it every day, atleast I sold it to my uncle so I can still drive it if I wish.

Im a BIG car fanatic regardless of the fact that I am a girl...its something I do with my dad and I prefer the SS. BUT, then again it is because im partial to the '69 SS...as regards to the RS, i can tell you that I have seen SS outperform an RS. Then again...how was the RS tuned and vice versa.
As to which is a better buy....what year, mileage, condition? If you are considering the new 07 camaro that they are bringing out...I detest the interior, the body is a beauty but the dash and gages are not my style.

both cars are the best cars but keep reading,
rs is better if your looking for a muscel car the cost of this car is very high and if you can find one in great shapes then you will have a fine muscel car,now the ss is a nice car for todays cars and trucks, the super sport is the better buy for the cars and trucks now,the ss was also a muscel car and they ran fast and clean.
i hope this helped you in some way
and good luck to you on your buy

SS has the same LS1 engine, used in the Corvette. I drove a 99 SS for a few years & it's a wodnerful brute. Now driving a 99 C5 Corvette & it's a whole 'nuther thing - drives totally different.

SS is faster. RS is more like a base model. I would rather have the SS.

The RS has flip up headlights and the SS has the round static headlights in the grill, amongst other differences this is a big visual one.
