get a civic or integra. You can find a good one for a very good price if you search long enough. Hatchback civics have excellent handling (even in snow, which is a great benefit come winter time), and with a 5 spd, they have fairly good acceleration- and are reasonable fun to drive. I just picked up a 1990 hatchback for $1900 with only 48,000 miles on it. I plan on using it to commute to college. I will use it until it has ~200,000 miles, and then look for another bargain. I can probably sell it for $1000, and have something i at least somewhat like. If you want, you can modify it also (tons of aftermarket parts), but I think they are much better stock. Then when you get more money, consider something fancier- but i prefer purchasing bargain civics

My 18 year old son says pontiac Grand Am GT is the way to go - they are fast and good looking and not too expensive if you get an older one.

Get a Toyota, Subaru (Brats r cool as), or honda-although expensive to fix.
Toyotas/subis are extremely reliable.
