my friend's father passed away a year ago, and she's been put on xanax and prozac for it. i talked to her today and she didn't sound happier. she sounded more desperate and angry and sad than i've ever heard her, and i am honestly disturbed by this. she said she felt completely miserable the first two weeks she was on the drugs, having suicidal thoughts and everything, but now she felt a little better. i thought stuff like xanax and prozac are supposed to make you feel better, not worse. i've heard that for some people, this may actually make you feel worse than better. so is this right?

Talk to her parent some drugs say on the side effects this drug may cause suicidal tendencies....if so consult physician especially in young teens and young adults....I would talk to them in confidence but if she commits suicide loosing her friendship will be your last concern. Sometimes all a person needs is time not meds. good luck.

It's true, while xanax and prozac, as wells as other anti-depressants are supposed to make a person feel better, in some people they seem to have the opposite effect. It happens to teenagers a lot and some adults. If those medications are not actually making her feel a little better, then she needs to try something else - either a new drug or a different kind of therapy such as talking to a psychiatrist or pastor or something else. Really, in a situation like this where the depression is brought on my grief and death, the best thing the person can do is deal with the situation and take as much time as needed to grieve. The drugs are more for people who have chronic, re occuring depression or anxiety problems (xanax is used for stress, anxiety, nervousness, and depression among other things) It concerns me that her doctors have not tried different medications if she's been suicidal since the start of her therapy. If she's not telling her doctors these things, she needs to. And if she's suicidal, she needs more than just drugs. She needs caring people like you to tell her that even though her dad is gone life is worth living and suicide is not the answer.
As an answer to your question: No, when I was on antidepressants, I didn't really feel better. It was a band aid for bigger problems. I took them from the ages of 9 to 17. In those years, I was never really happy. I thought that happiness was a destination that you arrived at after a long journey. Truthfully, happiness is a state of mind, looking at one's life and saying "This may be bad, but at least it's not this bad. there are other people who have it harder than me and life can still be beautiful." When I was on them, my emotions were simply: happiness and anger, more anger than anything though b/c I felt broken and not good enough and that's why I was on the drugs to begin with.
Hope this helped.

Personally, I do not believe that depression can be treated by any form of medication. Whether a person wants to be depressed and miserable for a long time is his choice. To me, depression is a state of mind which is only temporary brought about by some sad or unhappy events or incidents, but after a while, you get over it and depression goes away. Tell yourself not to be depressed and look at the bright side of your life. It works. Determination is the key.
