If you can throw the knife, throw it into it's skull. But be accuate, you've only got one shot and if you miss that, the bear will maul you.
OR
You need to just slice it's jugular. You can't just hack at it expecting to nail it's heart. It's deeper than 6 inches in.

Cut some sticks and some shavings with the knife. Rub the sticks together to start a fire. Get yourelf a flaming torch, and the bear will stay away from you.
