Well, take everything out.

Come up with three bins. Keep, sort, toss.

Go through each item and put in appropriate bin. Make sure all socks have mates, clothes fit and you like, shoes fit and look clean, etc.

Once you've created your keep bin, you'll need to organize it. Keep colors together. Black socks with black. White with white. Mutil-color with multi-color, etc. Keep drawers for socks/undies/bras/hosiery. Sweaters can be stored folded neatly in drawers. Closets can hold clothing in a variety of ways, but I find it best to keep pants together, shirts, dresseds, skirts, etc. You may want to devise a system where the first three pants hanging there are work pants, the first three skirts are for work, etc. Whatever works best for you.
Your sort pile should pretty much be a charity box. If you weren't inclined to keep it after the first round of organzing, get rid of it! Besides, your drawers and closets are already looking great!
Toss can be just that. Toss it out the window. Toss it into the Salvation Army if you like.
A good thing to buy is bins in a variety of sizes to strore off-season clothing and also shoe cubes.

Have fun while you're doing it! Listen to some music! You'll feel free!

The first thing you need to do is get rid of anything you haven't worn in the last 6 months. Give it away, throw it away. Whatever, doesn't matter how you get rid of it.

I organise my clothes by types. Tops in one drawer, bottoms (pants/skirts) in another. Same applies to clothes you hang, do it in sections. In these sections I group them according to usage, work clothes/everything else.

I have a confession, I don't pile things neatly in my drawers. I do fold them to start with but they don't stay that way. Luckily because I have everything separated I can still find what I'm looking for.

Thirdly, maintenance. Every 6 months have a clean out. Don't hold onto thing because you think they'll come back into fashion.

I agree with the professional organizer on most things except for the sort piles. I do this and have one pile to throw away, one for charity and one to keep. Then when I am done I go thru the keep pile again and sort again. Don't keep anything you haven't used for a year (complete change of seasons) and do store the out of season clothes. Just store them in a place you can get to them easily (like under the bed) so if you do need that hoodie you can get it with a minimum of fuss.

drawers:
top for socks
underwear under socks
tshirts under underwear
shorts under tshirts
night clothes go on the bottom

closet:
church clothes/ 2 or 3 piece outfits go in the back or far left, then jeans, then pants, then Capri's, then long sleeves with buttons, then sweaters, then shirts
dress shoes go under the church clothes, then boots, then gym shoes, then sandals

this is how i organize my things so i know where everything is...I keep a basket behind the dress shoes for things i don't want any more and when it is full i drop it off at goodwill, basket and all, then stop at the dollar store and get another basket!

ps... i totally disagree with the organizer above ^, i never put out of season clothes away, keep them all out all of the time...never know when you'll need a hoodie or a flanel or a halter! (and boots! can't put our boots away just because its summer! we may want to stomp in the mud!)

its really a matter of what you are willing to spend to do the job, have you gone to the extent of getting a closet organizing system? hanging shirts on one level and short skirts and folded jeans on a second level like the closet systems do really helps you get more out of your space, those space bags would be good to store out of season clothing, shoe bag on the back of your door. lots of ideas but i dont know what you can do.

Listen to the professional organizer here. She know's what she is talking about. I wanted to say the same thing. But now i'm just agreeing what she is saying to give you a 2nd opinion. Hope this helps.

Plastic containers - you can get them cheap at the dollar store and you can stack them neat in your closet and always see what's inside so you can find stuff.

one peice at a time, if you havent worn it /used it in six months or so (or set a reasonable time) toss it! no excuses! You've got to be strict with yourself though. It's a start :)

maybe get rid of some of the things you don't wear anymore or don't fit and donate them to a church,a homeless shelter or a thrift store.
