If you take a psychological view point, fear is a learned response. Its association between alarm state (physical & mental) with a particular situation or stimulus. Most often our fears are irrational to a great extent. And theorist have stated that fear can be unlearnt too through various therapies.

Fear can also be due to ignorance or lack of knowledge (but we cannot narrow out thought to these two aspects). Fear can also be influenced by sensitivity to a particular stimulus.

Some fears are acquired by influence, like fear of girls; some fears are caused by an experience, like someone who fears to look at a dead person because he or she has seen a person violently; other fears are from our human instincts, like our fear of pain.
