Minorities seem to want to be accepted and have "equal rights" and be treated the same. Why is it then, that many minority groups in America do things culturally to further segregate themselves from the mainstream they want to be a part of?

It isn't cultural segregation,.......it's their heritage. An identity isn't an imprisonment of the mind, it is the very food that feeds a wise mind. The 'minorities" is doing the majority a favor through such colourful interaction. How you approach it is what later defines your perception, whether it is feared as an alien and unwanted element in your social group or as a peeling off of superficial labels towards the so called strangers in your midsts. It's also about tolerance.

A culture that is dynamic may adapt itself to it's new geo / social setting, but still the essence of it must be kept alive. No reasonable argument for annihilating it's right to be openly practiced has been set forth by it's detractors. Most "traditonal "culture you can find existing presently, is an amalgam of all sorts of preeceding ethos birthed by a population with a cosmopolitan worldview and that allows it to be sophisticated enough for todays needs.

It is human nature to want to be accepted or "fit in" with others in a society. However, that does not mean that people want to 'disappear' into the society. Rather, people often take comfort within a larger society by spending time with people who are similar. We often find that people associate with others who share cultural traits, ethnic ones, or religious ones. Within the greater culture of a society, there are often many sub-cultures. Just explore your city, town, or country and you will find groups based on similarities - hot-rodders, surfers, musicians, artists, dancers. Most societies have groups or oganizations establ;ished that allow for the celebration of what makes a particular group different from the rest of the society. Most Western societies are based on a melting pot principle. That is to say that many different kinds of people have come together to creat a diverse mainstream culture. However within that greater population, we are individuals and there is certainly a special comfort in sharing and celebrating those differences with those that we are like.

I've wondered the same.
All the Asians in my school hang out together, and hang out with only a few other people of different races.
I think the reason has something to do with the need to be with people of similar backgrounds.
I'm not sure this is what your question was asking, but I tried.

why do you only hang out with a certain group of people? why do you culturally segregate yourself from others? It's because we like to be part of something, to feel like we belong somewhere, something that you identify yourself with...
