Lebanon--January 1944 from the French.

In this century they have been under Ottoman (Turk), French, Vichy French, and British control. They were considered one country called (obviously) Lebanon/Syria, but it was also referred to as the 'Levant'. After WWII they gained independence from France. Lebanon, as now, has usually been under Syria's thumb.
