What role can top management play in helping a company achieve superior efficiency, quality, innovation, and responsiveness to customers? How are these four generic building blocks of competitive advantage related to each other?

First part of your question:
management must lead by example to employees and take the time train them for their positions - this is efficiency. Management does the interviewing and hiring of employees and must know the business well in order to select quality employees. Management must create a working environment that allows employees the creativity to network, experiment and fail, and learn to improve - this is innovation. Management must know the market their product is being manufactured for and must rely on the expertise of its work staff to brainstorm and come up with innovative solutions to capture more of the marketplace.

Second part of your question:
A company will fail if:
It does have qualified, motivating, responsible managers to oversee the staff. If you have an inadequate manager, you will have an even more inadequate staff because their skills are directly tied to what the manager trains them for. If the manager is top-notch, chances are you will gain a top-notch work force. If your management team is only mediocre and un-motivated they will train their staff to be the same....
