I really need some advice. I'm getting some very nasty phone calls from collection agencies & it's really stressing me out. I did some math today & I have 14 maxxed out credit cards equalling over $25,000 in debt. I know that is completely monstrous & that I was very irresponsible. I'm really not sure what I was thinking, but I know I have got to take some action. I want to file for bankruptcy, but obviously I can't afford a lawyer. I know that a person can file pro se, but I tried to fill out the paperwork & can't understand hardly any of it. I'm at my wit's end about this now. The only income I have is my $200 a month for child support (of which there isn't enough left over to make a difference on my debt). Gabe's checks barely cover our utilities & groceries, so he's unable to help out either. All of our bills get paid except my credit cards & store accounts. I just don't know what to do! Please offer any advice you can. Thanks.

Sidenote: I'm 39 weeks pregnant (& can't work).

Well, if you're going to do a BK, don't bother with the chap 13 repayment plan thing. Go with the chap 7, and put it behind you completely. A chap 13 BK doesn't show up any better than a chap 7 on your credit report. Besides, your credit is shot now anyway, so don't put yourself deeper in the hole by trying to pay the debt under chap 13. Write it off, and start fresh. If I was you, I'd change my phone number, too. There are many free legal aid clinics, etc. that will help you. Look in the phone book to find them.

You definitely need to file for bankruptcy. If you're having issues with paperwork I'm sure you can post questions about wording and whatnot here. Barring that, there should be a bankruptcy lawyer who can help you without up-front charges. Check your yellow pages and call around.

You can do it, just remember to believe in yourself and know that there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

Go see a Lawyer that does Bankruptcies. I am not aware that they ask for money up front. I thought they add that to the payment? Wouldn't even make sense, people that file don't have any money, that's why they file Bankruptcy.
Look in the Yellow Pages.

It is possible but difficult to file bankruptcy pro se. You didn't mention where you live. Lots of good information appears on my bankruptcy website, www.bankruptcy.lakelaw.com

So check it out. There are links to good bankruptcy lawyers in various parts of the country too. So this might help you.

Good luck

Okay honey first of all breathe....I have been down this road myself. What part of the paperwork don't you understand? I filled out all my paperwork by myself just by printing off the instructions and asking questions myself. Since I had a general idea of the bankruptcy process I was able to file per se and also make my installment agreements ($50 every two weeks) and I am ever so grateful that I filed because it stops those nasty creditors from harassing you everyday. I really would suggest that you email me and let me know what propblem you are having with the paperwork because being stressed and talking to creditors can reek havoc on your brain so I totally understand....If you want to know how to fill it out, email me at sammiejoe2006@yahoo.com

You can at least consult with an attorney to see what the price will be. Other than the nasty phone calls and letters, they can't do anything do you unless they file a lawsuit against you. The can't do anything like seize assets until they sue you and win a judgment. Call your local county bar association for a lawyer referral.

Well, If that was me in that situation first try snowballing your credit cards. That is try paying to pay the small amount off first then work on the others later. Can u have a yard sales or do a little extra to get some extra income in. U probably really need to wait until the baby comes and u heal before u go at this full force.
