There is no shortage of good free antivirus software. The more popular ones are: Avast, AVG and Antivir. In addition, you are in luck, both Comodo and AOL have recently released free versions of their antivirus software. Here are some resources to help you choose.
1. Review: Free Antivirus Software -- by About.com (http://antivirus.about.com/od/antivirussoftwarereviews/a/freeav.htm)
The article puts all three free AV software, AVG, Avast and Antivir, though a series of tests and measures their ability to both detect and remove viruses.
Other worthy mentions are:
1. Bitdefender Free Edition - this is PC World pick because of its stellar detection and removal rate but, unfortunately, the free edition does not include real-time protection. (http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html)
2. Comodo Free Antivirus - PC magazines rated Comodo's AV as top notched but, unfortunately, it is a relatively newcomer to the AV market and, like other new products, it has some bugs that need fixing. In addition, some security experts have criticize Comodo with including adware in their products - which is partial true. (http://www.antivirus.comodo.com/)
3. AOL Antivirus Service - it was released today. AOL's AV is built with Kaspersky AV scanning engine. Kaspersky AV is consistently rated in the top three antivirus software available. Kaspersky, until today's release, was only available as a commercial product. (http://www.download.com/AOL-Active-Virus-Shield/3000-2239_4-10568703.html?tag=sptlt_s)

www.grisoft.com get the AVG free antivirus. it works great. I myself do not ever use virus protection and have never gotten a virus. malware is a different story tho.
I also thinjk that microcsoft offers a free antivirus and spyware suite for free for registered windows xp users.

AVG antivirus is the best! I used to use McAffee, but the cost was getting to be a pain. When I installed AVG, it found problems tha McAffee missed! I reccomend it!
