The first day is actually the easiest day. But here's how to prepare so that you'll face the least amount of stress.

1) Don't buy all of your books yet, since you may find out on the first day that there have been changes to the syllabus.

2) Don't bring your books to class on the first day. Just bring one notebook, one folder, and a pen to each class. Your professors will hand out syllabi on the first day, go over course requirements, maybe lecture a little, introducing basic concepts, and if the class is small, they might ask the students to introduce themselves. You'll probably get out of class early.

2) BEFORE classes start, learn the locations of the buildings your classes are in. Walk the campus the day before to familiarize yourself.

3) Plan on waiting in long lines at the bookstore. But don't go there until after you have your syllabi in hand! If you decide to buy your books online instead, have them shipped FAST, since you'll get your first reading assigments on the first day.

4) When in class, raise your hand and ASK your professor to clarify anything you don't understand. Odds are that other students didn't get it either, and you'll be doing everyone a favor.

5) Read the syllabi when you get home. Learn when assignments are due, put them on your calendar, and START THEM before they are due. You'll be glad you did.

Otherwise, relax. The first day is a breeze.

- Well, the day before school begins, walk around campus. Trace the routes between each of your classes and make sure you can find them easily. Look for the room numbers too.
- If you can, buy your books a few days before classes start. Otherwise, the bookstores might runout of the books you need and they will be jam packed with other students.
- The morning classes start, get up a little early, have a good breakfast, and take your time getting ready. Try to stay calm.
- Bring at least a pen and a notebook with pockets on the first day.
- You don't need to lug all of your books to your first day of classes - you won't need them.
- I always pack a lunch the first day. Most of the dining halls/on-campus restaurants will be very crowded. It helps to just bring your own lunch at first.
- If you drive, leave a little early to find parking and avoid a lot of traffic.
- Make sure to turn your cell phone on silent during classes - teachers hate when they ring and vibrate.
- Don't forget to talk to other people. Ask for help if you need to. It always helps to find a friend or two early on.

The first day is always tough, hell, every semester is kinda awkward. I started college in a different state away from all my friend and in about 2-3 weeks i had a group of friends, just hang around stuff that interests you. Everyone expects new people around the first few days of school. The cafe is always a good place to meet people or strike up a convo while your buying books, anywhere there's usually a line. Good luck!

ahhh, first day, aka syllabus day. Easiest day of the semester. Most profs go over the syllabus and just leave it at that. Some start lecturing. Bring a notebook and pen to take notes just in case. Be nice, introduce yourself to the prof after class so that he/she can put a name to a face. You'll get brownie points that way. Wear comfortable shoes. For the love of God, do not wear heels. So many freshmen make that mistake. Your feet will thank you later. Take a light jacket in case classrooms are cold.

The day or two prior to the first day of class, walk around campus and find your buildings. Go into the buildings and find your specific classroom if you can. Makes it so much easier the first day and you don't have to be "that guy" that walked in late.

I’m not sure if this is relevant to your concerns, but I gave the following advise to a earlier question. It might help.

Most classes on the first day will consist of your professor going over his/her syllabus and letting you know what to expect. After this a few will end class, but many will go right into a lecture or presentation/discussion of the course. Some professors will start by having everyone introduce themselves to the class, others will jump right in to the new material.

Very few professors will expect you to have started studying the material prior to class, however i did have a couple that expected such.

In terms of what to bring. Something to take notes on, takes notes with, to store handouts in and your text book. The text book thing is optional and you will figure out if you will need it on a daily basis based on what your professor tells you.

A couple of suggestions.
Turn your cell phone off or at least on silent.

Put the ipod or other music player away once you get to class.

Dress in what your comfortable wearing. Shower, the others in your class and your professor will notice if you don't. I'm amazed at the number of my students who refuse to shower prior to coming to class.

Enjoy college and good luck

You know what, this is a great question. The whole thing with college is to meet people, don't worry as much about classes, no teachers really keep you the whole time. Just try to meet people, they are all in the same situation as you, where they just want to find the best way to get along. Be yourself and you will be fine. And be nice, its the best way to meet the right people.

Yeah, just don't cheat on anyone, kick anyone in the face, or do drugs and the first day should be pretty good.
