because as people of a certain culture with a certain backround, we are terrified of what we believe is 'different' or what we cannot understand... same thing goes for the weather, religion, culture, points of view.... (etc, etc, etc...)
The solution? use your brain instead of only your eyes...

Because the color of a persons skin is the first thing we see. This is not rascism. Rather, it is instinctual. There are many examples of this in the animal kingdom. How many gazelle do you think like to stick around when there is a cheetah within close proximity to them? What would happen if you approached a grizzly bear?
Animals have learned to associate differences with each other as something to be feared. Humans have as well.
I am going to assume you are white. Imagine what your perspective would be on black people in general if a group of black people mugged you. I am sure that you would never feel the same way about african americans again.
You can apply this to any ethnic group.
This is not a problem limited to america either, and it is not a problem that is even so obvious as skin color. In africa there is genocide between different tribes. While they look the same to us, apparently to each other they look as different as cats and dogs.
You may know the fervor with which the japanese fought us during world war 2. 250 men battled up iwo jima, and only 27 walked back down again. But compared to the Chinese we made out great. The japanese have an ancient racial hatred of the japanese, and during ww2 they killed many of them. Could you honestly tell the difference between a person from china and a person from japan?
The decades may roll by, and society as a whole may become more modern as time goes by, but one thing will remain constant: we are only human. The only type of person who will not be rascist is going to be a blind person, since he does not use his eyes to assess his surroundings.

Well, there is such a thing as reverse discrimination, too. I work in place where I'm one of only 8 "whites" there. Trust me in happens in reverse. I don't care who the person is on the outside,it's the inside that counts, and if that's crap,it's crap, lol

There's no time for thinking and since you can see their color, you can judge them without having to think anyway...!
