The Core 2 Duo, hands down.
I can't believe the advice from the others. Obviously, they're still stuck in the past where AMD has dominated Intel for the past 3 years since the release of the Athlon 64. The Core 2 Duo changes all that, and not by a small margin.
It's a different technology altogether that's even rattled AMD's top-of-the-line CPUs. The Core 2 Duo is extremely efficient. It redefines the "performance per MHz" war that AMD has been winning all these years. Now it's in Intel's favor by a large margin, and they've stepped it up a notch by introducing a new war - "performance per watt". Very little power is needed by the new Core 2 Duo in comparison to any other CPU on the market.
When comparing a Core 2 Duo to a similar speed Athlon X2, the Intel's powerhouse will crush it in every benchmark by at least 10%, and in many by as much as 20%. It will be more expensive for the most part, however. But you can expect that with just about anything that's new to the market...
These two articles will explain it in more detail if you're interested:

The Core 2 Duo will run faster. The Athlon X2 4800+ compares to a Core 2 Duo @ 2.13GHz, and the Core 2 Duo @ 2.4GHz compares to a Athlon FX-60.
Core 2 Duo is the next generation of processors offering energy efficent performance.

Depends what you are going to do with the computer. Generally speaking AMD processors are better at computer gaming. And Intel processors are better at just about everything else.

Depends on what you want to do. If you only do one thing at a time the AMD is faster, but if you do two things at a time the Intel will be faster.

If you are gonna buy the processor and leave it alone, then go with intel, but AMD is more efficient and you can overclock it to get tons of power out of it.
Here is a very helpful guide to overclocking your processor.
