I've been in this job for 18 months and it's ok. It's not amazing and exciting but it's not a living hell either, just somewhere in between. I get along well with my co-workers, the hours are manageable, cant complain about the pay. My only problem is that my boss is horrible and treats us unfairly and makes unreasonable demands. I know I have it pretty good otherwise but my boss is making me hate this job. Should I start looking around elsewhere and think about quitting?

Nothing wrong with keeping your options open by looking around... but be discrete. I wouldn't tell a soul. I certainly would have another job lined up before I quit the one I had. Many things could happen where you are... you could be promoted, transferred, or relocated. Your boss could quit or retire or get fired or just plain die of a heart attack. I wouldn't count on him passing away... the meanest ones seem to live forever!

It sounds like you have your eyes wide open about your job. That will help you greatly making this decision. I think it sounds like you are at the point where you should start looking, because you can see the future here is not real promising if this boss isn't going anywhere. Luckily for you, your co-workers make this liveable until you find a better opportunity. Do not tell anyone you work with you are looking as this could get back to management and might come back to bite you. There is always the chance that after you look around you realize your job, even with your boss, is better than you thought. Good luck!

Keeping your options open and looking at other opportunities makes sense. However, you can never be sure what the people you work with at a new site will be like or what changes will occur there. I would recommend that you read the 8th habit by Stephen Covey. In the book he talks about managing your relationship with a difficult boss. If you take the initiative to manage your boss, your own reputation will improve with your company and perhaps with your boss as well. You will always have difficult people to work with, take this as an opportunity to learn to deal with people constructively.

Since you're asking the question, I would say that, yes, you should.

Or....

Is there anyone that you can talk to with specific horrible & unfair treatment situations? Can you talk to your boss?

You do have a right to be treated with respect & fairness!

Just because everyone else "chooses" to tolorate it, does not mean you have to.

Handle yourself right by not taking anything said or done PERSONALLY, In other words - Do Not React to anything. Have a pen & paper and actually take notes.

Take notes now so if you do feel intimidated when approaching anyone, this will help you to stay focused.

Most consider handling this type of situation as being a "SNITCH", however, why should someone use their "team" to abuse because they are so miserable?

Good Luck!

Have you every considered working for yourself from home?

If you're questioning whether to look for something better then you should have answered your own question. Yes, look. It's not a bad idea to always keep your eye on the horizon looking for something better anyway. BUT keep the job until you find something better. (including with more pay, or at least the same)

There's always a chance that there isn't a better job for you, in which case you'll have to just stick to it and deal with the boss as best you can.

It is time to quit when you no longer feel happy with what you are doing AND when you have another job.

ps:however, some research shows that people should not wait to quit if they dont have another job--not having a job will put you in a position where you HAVE to find a job... otherwise you might never quit...

Hold on for as long as possible. Do your best no matter what. And look for another job. When you have an offer, THEN it's time to leave.

Why not? The one who is prepared will always be better than the rest.

you may want to "broaden your horizon" or "expand your network". but try to leave on good terms just in case you need them as references, etc.... keep in mind that there are assholes everywhere in every job. good luck!
