How can I do this using Illustrator CS? or do I need Illustrator CS2 (Live Trace)?

I'm not exactly if this answeres your question,, But I have been playing with CorelDraw12 and I believe it's capable of doing what you are trying to do.. if not,,then forgive me, butI it's about the standard in the industry as of this moment.
they have a trialware version you can play with,, I think this link will get you there.

I think coreltrace is good software for transforming raster imges to vector.
