Fill a five gallon jug completely. From the full five gallon jug dump contents into three gallon jug until it is full. This will leave 2 gallons in the 5 gallon jug. Mark the point where this comes to in the 5 gallon jug. Now empty the 3 gallon jug. Now take the 2 gallons and empty it into the 3 gallon jug. Next fill the 5 gallon jug to the point you previously marked as 2 gallons. Now the 5 gallon jug contains 2 gallons and the 3 gallon jug contains 2 gallons.

There's a few different ways but here's one. Fill the 5 gallon jug full of water. Pour the water from the 5 gallon jug into the three gallon jug leaving 2 gallons left in the 5 gallon jug. Dump the three gallon jug out and pour the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug. Refill the 5 gallon jug full again - then pour this water into the remaining space of the three gallon jug. There's only room for one gallon to pour out leaving four gallons left in the five gallon jug.

Fill the 5 gallon jug and pour into the 3 gallon jug, leaving 2 gallons of water in the 5 gallon jug. The 3 gallon jug is emptied and 2 gallons from the 5 gallon are poured into it, which leaves 1 gallon of empty space. Youn then fill the 5 gallon jug and empty one gallon from the 5 gallon into the 3 gallon jug, leaving exactly 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug. BAM--its from Die Hard with a vengeance

To get four gallons, fill the three gallon jug, and dump it into the five gallon jug. Fill the three gallon jug again, and dump what you can into the five gallon jug. Now there is one gallon in the three gallon jug. Dump out the five gallon jug, and put the one gallon from the three gallon jug into the five gallon jug. Now fill the three gallon jug. The total is four gallons.
