A topic sentence (of a paragraph) simply needs to clearly state what the paragraph will prove.

Every paragraph is a microcosm of an essay, and needs to be proving something.

Also, be sure you have good transitions.

A topic sentence tells the reader what your paragraph is about.

For example:

The differences between cantaloupe and watermelon are very strange...

What is the subject matter. A standard phrase of patent agent jargon goes like this , "this inventive device relates to the art of ...."
