Our neighbor accidentally cut a natural gas line. The police and fire department showed up. I was wondering if the utility company will bill the person who cut it, and how much. Please include your source.

If your neighbor cut into the line belonging to the utility (usually from the street to the meter), the person who cut it will likely be billed. It is the responsibility of the person doing the digging to call the utility company before digging in order that the location of the line can be determined. Utility companies will locate and flag the location of the lines for free in order to avoid these kinds of incidents.

From the house gas meter to all parts of the house are the responsibility of the owner. In that case the utility company will probably bill the property owner regardless of who actually cut the line.

I hope this information helps.

they probably cut the homeowners line . gas mains are usually under the street. gas co. will shut it off at curb box until repairs are done. usually a new plastic line and riser on the house, plus a registered plumber to do a certified pressure check before gas co. turns on service.
