I think Yahoo is still considered a search engine - though many of these search engines are developing into full service online communities.

Yahoo was born as a search engine, similar to google's founding. Now, Yahoo is a search engine, an ISP, a email provider and a photo storage site. Of course you can add to this list, but I think that Yahoo could be classified as an internet services provider.

Sorry to burst your bubbles guys but Yahoo! started as a DIRECTORY, not a search engine.
Yahoo didn't use spiders and web crawling software as search engines do. The only way to have your site on Yahoo! at that time was to submit it manually, in the proper area and hope that it would make it there. Now Yahoo! uses webcrawler and spiders like any good search engines. www.dmoz.org is a directory (for those curious to see what it looks like).

Yahoo! provides a search engine, at search.yahoo.com. This is what popularized Yahoo!. They are now better know as a portal for services, which includes searching, shopping, email, social related computing, and about ten million other things.

As far as I know, Yahoo! started as just a search engine,,,like Excite and Lycos. Now it's more like an internet community such as AOL.

i like yahoo because google sucks and has lots of pop ups.
yahoo gives it to you as it is. Top 10 sites and then more, google just sucks.
