You can do it by typing

It may not show up on all browsers (I'm using firefox and can see it here). It's like this because Yahoo! is using the UTF-8 encoding.

Run
Type in: charmap
Will open a window that shows all the symbols you can't type
Go to the one you want
Click on it and you will get a popup that shows you the key combination for it...or
Click the Copy button at the bottom and then paste it into your document

Well, obviously SHIFT-8 is an asterisk.
The Alt trick I think only works with Microsoft Word Processors.

for a nice five-point star, open character map (programs > accessories > system tools > character map) and go to the font 'wingdings'. the five-point star is character code 0xAB. just select the star and copy it. paste it into your word processor or whatever to use it.

If you mean the star symbol used in IM, try (*).
If you meant something else, I am not sure.

it is in your Number keypad, if you are using spanish its shift + the key next to the enter, if you are using english then it is shift + 8
