Besides the obvious, bedding, clothing, laptop, and toiletries. Any tips on how to make it seem less dorm like and give it personality are appreciated too.

I covered every space of the wall on my side which of course is up to you. Posters & Bunch of pictures should do the trick =] If you dont want holes in your precious pics, thumb tacks work best (of course. depends on the wall).

when in doubt, create a collage on a poster. tape. and voila. PERSONALITY!

Space is limited anyways. So if you dont need to extend that desk, if you dont care about lofting your bed....go ahead.

Oh yeah. A stereo system might add personality to your space. Bump the music (of course not during quiet hours) & open your door. A way to share with the rest of your floormates your awesome music. And who knows? The guy down the hall who seems hella quiet, might end up liking it and say hi to you.

College was a long time ago, but I still remember some of the details.

Try using houseplants. Even one plant can do a lot for a tiny dorm room.

Some of us built our own bunk beds using 2x4s and nails. This would free up a lot of space for other furniture, like a couch and coffee table.

Decorate the ceiling with banners, flags, camo netting, etc.

Lighting options can also have an effect. An adjustable lamp can soften the lighting and create ambiance.

I don't recommend stealing Stop signs. It's very dangerous for drivers and yourself.

Lights. Get a small string of clear Christmas lights and put them on your side, or both sides if your roommate is cool with it. Lots of times all you get is a fluorescent light on the ceiling. Absolutely no class.

Refrigerator and microwave.

Pictures of your friends and family. Every once in a while, there are homesick times.

A black and white poster.

wall shelves- extra storage, or for displays.

I saw some girls who coordinated their bedding- sounds cheesy, but really made the room look nice and put together instead of a random hodge podge of style.

torchiere lamps are nice for indirect light you can dim.
