whats the point of having a trade deadline if teams just release and another team signs them then releases and another team signs them making it basically a trade

G'day YdNm614,

Thanks for the question.

The deadline for non-waiver trading has passed. The deadline for playoff rosters is set on August 31 so you still see trading until that date for teams hoping to beef up their roster for postseason play.

MLB is running a story of likely people who find themselves on different teams in September.

the trade deadline on July 31st in the non-waiver trade deadline..

In Hernandez' case, he was waived prior to the trade deadline, giving the Nats ten days to trade him to a team that puts a claim in for him, which is done via reverse order, worst to first.. If a team claims him, as Arizona did, the two sides have to work out a deal or Hernandez gets sent to the minors..

Between now and August 31st, any deal, both players involved must clear waivers, i.e. not be claimed by another team, if a team puts a claim in (and almost always do) then the deal is off, or the team putting a claim in must work out a deal..

it is called waivers. if some teams are agreed by the commissioner they can be traded. Like Javy lopez of the Baltimore Orioles went to the Boston Redsox's because Jason Veriteck went down.

A player has to be put on waivers by his team and every major league team with a worse record than who he is going to be traded to has to pass on picking him up off waivers.
