Please disreguard the answers above. They obviously have not talked to their doctors about this. Deli meats can be extremely dangerous if not reheated. Deli meats can carry the Listeria bacteria, and this, while causing little or no symptoms to the mother can be deadly to the fetus. Deli meats are also high in Nitrates, making them high in sodium.

It's not just turkey, it's all cold-cut meats. There is a risk of contracting Listeria from cold-cut meat, unless it has been cooked prior. The risk is small, but it is there. The incubation period for listeriosis is 30 to 90 days. Symptoms mock the flu and I believe a simple blood test if you show these symptoms can tell you if you have it. Here in Ontario, Canada, we just had a large listeria outbreak, where 19 people died from contacting it. I don't believe any were pregnant women. They found the source camee from an improperly cleaned slicer. All cold-cut meat products from the company (Maple Leaf) were pulled from the shelves until they found the source, and since the outbreak has ended commercials have been running on television like crazy apologizing for this and explaining the findings. The most susceptible are the elderly, children, those with weakened immune systems and pregnant women, because of the weakened immune system. It is okay to eat cold-cut meats, I ate them throughout my pregnancy with my daughter and did this pregnancy until the outbreak happened. Now I won't go near anything made by that company, or eat subs. If you don't mind heated meats, go ahead and heat them, but if not and you're still worried, then best to skip the cold cut meats until after pregnancy.

I have never heard specifically about not eating turkey but I have heard that pregnant women should stay away from deli lunch meats in general. Something to do with pasteurization I think. Try doing an Internet search for more accurate info.

All deli meats (not just turkey) can cause listeria, which could harm your baby (this is especially true if the meat isn't refrigerated properly). You should also avoid softserve ice cream...if the machines aren't cleaned thoroughly, you can catch lysteria from that, too. You'll probably not notice it, but it can kill your baby.

My doctor told me you can eat everything in moderation which includes deli meats and most fish. He said just don't go crazy and eat it everyday.
