Take the word "nurse" for example.

A person from yorkshire says it like this "nerse"
Other english people say it like this "nooorse"

Scots just say "nurse" the way it's spelt.
The Scottish accent is probably the most correct out of all the UK.

Same goes for "turkey", "work" and "burger"
They say "tooorkey", "wooork" and "booorger"

I teach English at a China university. There are different types of English. One point is colour or color. Will you be going to the medical center or the medical centre. It is not easy; I stay up on British, Canadian, and American English. Believe me, it is not that easy. But with that said, we are in a world that is getting smaller each day; we can adjust and accept the English from different countries.

As the wife of a person from Yorkshire, you are confused. My husband pronounces nurse the way it's spelled and if you ask him, it's the Americans who do not know how to speak properly. We've taken the English language and butchered it by changing spellings and pronunciations.
