People seem to live their life by the type of music they listen too. Remember high school? What did the pot heads listen to? The preppies? People want to find a comfort zone and music is an easy place to start. By keeping an open mind and diversifying you musical tastes you also show that you can diversify yourself as an individual. You can have your favorites, but closing your mind to all but one style of music shuts out a lot of great stuff.

I wouldnt say i restrict myself to one genre of music, although 90% of what I listen to is classic rock. Some modern rock, alternative, folk, rap, metal, disco, and reggae music is good. The reason some people would shut all genres of music out other than the one they enjoy the most is because they want to feel like they are part of something. They think that if they ONLY listen to punk rock, theyd be accepted by that crowd. Even if they do enjoy a rap song or two they would never admit it, at the risk of not totally fitting a certain musical stereotype any longer.
Another reason I can think of is that some people are simply closed minded and choose not to give any more than one genre of music a chance. Someone who grew up with country music may not take all that easily to searching out Tupacs greatest hits just to see if its decent music. Or perhaps they just dont know, some are sheltered.

People seem to do that because they want to be indentified by a specific type of music. May that be rap/emo/goth/jazz/whatever. There is another reason that people are ignorent and don't won't to try other type of music, beacuse they may fear change or just think that everything else is crap.
I personally like every possible type of songs/music xcept ofcourse country (can't imagine how people are able to listen to it)

No clue. My musical preferences are so wide. I listen to anything except opera...just can't get into it. Not a big fan of rap either but anything else I'm open to and I think more people need to widen their tastes. There is so much good music out there.

Yes, some people like myself primarily only listen to one genre of music but also listen to other types as well, just not as much.

Not everyone likes only one type of music. In fact, they're more than likely in the minority.
It could have something to do with whether or not they have had the opportunity to be exposed to other music, peer pressure, or they might not be able to distinguish the different qualities in other music.
I myself like just about everything, but prefer not to listen to Opera, and become bored with classical, and Japanese and Indian music. But that's me. No one said you have to like them all. There aren't rules for everything. Some things are left to preference, likes, and dislikes.

Some genres go very deep, so there's a lot to choose from before you get tired of it. But people that only listen to one style exclusively are just insecure and closed-minded, afraid to listen to something that doesn't fit with their image of themselves.
