I noticed that gays and straights alike use these words like they drink water, but not in a mean way, but they say it so calmly. Gays say it to each other, and straights say it to gays, and no one is offended. I personally still think only gays should be able to call each other these things in a friendly way( the same way blacks say n*gga), but sometimes when a straight says the word dyke, It doesn't get to me.

Well i don't think it's OK for anybody to use these words... these words were made to degrade Gay's and Lesbians, just like the word N*gger was made to degrade or belittle Blacks... why use a words with such hate-full meaning's as terms of endearment?? i think it's time to expand our vocab... cuz i damn sure am not a N*gger and i will not allow anyone to call me one, weather it be from a black person or a white person and i fell the same way about the word B*tch, dyke, and ******....

Think about it

I don't like how people use it as everyday slang. I mean I don't like the words but by not saying them and letting them get to us does thaty give the words power over us.
I like when dyke is used in an empowering way. And I think it is ok to say fag if you are talking about a cigerette. And I find it to be ok if you use the words in such a way as is the traditional meaning.Such as dike also dyke NOUN: An embankment of earth and rock built to prevent floods. A raised causeway. A ditch; a channel.

Words are words, sweetheart. If someone calls me a doorknob face with mean intent, I'd probably get mad (Not really, I'd just laugh and comeback with a smartass comment, like I do now when someone calls me a F*g or a n*gga or anything else derogatory.) I tend to take a lot in stride. The only time I really get upset is when people get up in my face-and even then I'm not upset because of what they called me, I'm more likely angered because they got in my face because I think that's rude.

I think you hit the nail on the head. yes, I notice this becoming more common, amongst ourselves. (Like, as you mentioned the way blacks will call each other n*gga).
now, dependent upon the context, when straights say it to gays, a lot of the time it IS offensive. but, like I said, depends upon the context.

I think we've managed to "reclaim" most of the insults. It really depends on how it's used. It can be used playfully by, IMO, anyone towards a gay or lesbian person. They can also be used as insults by some homophobic assholes. Heck, I refer to myself as a carpet-munching dyke all the time.

Unfortunately, my friend, we have become a society that protects itself by allowing the venacular, idioms, slang terminologies that we use. You are right - we tend to say these words and take them into ourselves so that when we are 'called' these words by other races or genders or people who are of different sexual persuasion - we don't hurt as badly. I still think it is sad. I would rather call each person by their proper names and love them as God has loved them. It is not my job to demean people or attempt to disarm them with negative words to kill their spirits. It is my job only to show love to all people - just as Jesus showed His love to me and forgave me for all the wrongs I commited. Who am I to judge others? I would never use those words to name people.

It's something rude to say and it's insulting for a straight person to say to a gay person. Gay to gay isn't as bad.

WHY DO WE HAVE TO CALL EACH OTHER NAMES? I HOPE THESE UGLY NAMES DO NOT GET WORSE. I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY PEOPLE HAVE TO LABEL AND JUDGE EACH OTHER. WHY DO THEY THINK BEING CALLED A TERRIBLE NAME IS COOL? IT ISN'T!!
