sounds like the flywheel is binding on the bell housing or the shaft is not lined up right

Auto or standard? Sounds like an auto and you need to put the spacer plate in or you have a pilot bushing left in the end of your crankshaft. If so, best get it fixed or you'll destroy the front pump in your tranny immediately. Take the torque converter and make sure that it fits into the crank. If it's got a little play that's fine. Just so it's not tight as hell. If all else fails, you could try to shim the transmission until it gets tight so you might have an idea of what's going on. Maybe the wrong flex plate. No reason why it would be anything in the engine unless you forgot to put the thrush bearing in. Good luck.

Do you have battery power to your starter, are the battery cables loose, or a ground wire left off? If you have battery power, but the motor physically will not turn over, like somthing is in a bind, you might have a flywheel/torque converter clearance issue

Ford makes good cars. Just remember, everybody has an OPINION, it doesn't mean they are right OR wrong.
Assume that you've checked the cables, battery, starter solenoid, and timing... with the tranny out, are you able to turn the input shaft by hand?

If the engine turns over out of the car, and not in, the transmission torque converter is not all the way in. Don't forget to put the spacer between the engine and transmission.

I'm confused. You say you can still turn the motor with the transmission fully bolted up to it ,IF, its off the motor mounts? OR. does the motor stop turning when you have the trans almost fully bolted up.
